1965 Volvo Amazon 220 Estate

We spotted this 1969 Volvo Amazon Estate on the East Anglia Motor Auction website. They say it was part of a private collection, acquired by in 1989 by the current owner! One former keeper. Original Buff logbook and purchase order form with optional extras and the original 'Ruddspeed' order form invoice. All Ruddspeed identification numbers match those on the engine block. Extensive file of history to show the vehicles pedigree. The car didn’t meet it’s reserve at auction in July 2025, but did sell after the auction. The new owner Jason Smy has kindly reached out and sent us a few photos of his purchase plus the following text

A Rare Find: My 1965 Ruddspeed Volvo Amazon Estate
Some classic cars capture your imagination the moment you see them — and for me, that moment came when I first laid eyes on a 1965 Volvo Amazon 121 estate, modified by Ruddspeed. It wasn’t just another beautifully preserved classic; it was a piece of motoring history with a story to tell.

I first came across the car at an auction in Suffolk. It sat quietly among a lineup of fine classics, dignified in its understated Scandinavian style, yet with something distinctly special about it. The reserve price wasn’t met that day, but I couldn’t get the car out of my mind. There was something about its originality and rarity that called to me. After some persistence, I managed to contact the owners directly — and after a few friendly conversations, we struck a deal. I consider myself very lucky indeed.

What makes this car truly unique is its Ruddspeed heritage. From new, it was sent to Rudddspeed — the respected British tuning company known for their craftsmanship and tasteful performance modifications. My car carries the signature Ruddspeed dashboard and a Les Leston steering wheel, both installed as part of its original Ruddspeed conversion. Remarkably, I have the original documentation, including the Rudddspeed job sheet, which adds an extra layer of provenance to its story.

The car has covered just 68,000 miles and comes with a full service history. It’s in excellent condition — a testament to the care it has received over the decades. I’m the third owner, following a previous custodian who kept the car for 36 years. He was a Volvo dealer with a deep appreciation for the marque and clearly understood the importance of preserving such a rare Ruddspeed example. His stewardship ensured that the car survived in its original glory, rather than being lost to time like so many others.

Now, the keys — and the responsibility — have passed to me. I plan to show the car at local events around Suffolk, sharing its story with fellow enthusiasts who appreciate both Volvo’s heritage and Ruddspeed’s understated craftsmanship. Every time I look at the car, I’m reminded not only of the joy of owning a classic but also of the history it represents — a collaboration between Swedish engineering and British ingenuity.

Owning this Ruddspeed Volvo Amazon estate isn’t just about having a rare car; it’s about continuing a legacy. I look forward to many years of driving, showing, and preserving it — ensuring that its story continues to be told.

Kind regards
Mr Jason Smy
